All good things start off accidentally, and TA39 is no different. One of the co-founders, curious about the new wave of AI, ran his daughter’s history essay through an LLM AI—one of those ChatGPT-like tools that had just emerged. The feedback was sharp—surprisingly sharp, catching the attention of her teachers at Design39Campus (D39). What started as a casual experiment quickly turned into something more. Fresh on the heels of AI’s latest leap, as society wrestled with its potential and pitfalls, these teachers saw real promise.

The teachers at D39 weren’t just interested in grading faster—they saw something bigger. They knew the real magic lay in providing each student with detailed, personalized feedback to help them grow. But with 150 students and piles of essays, this level of attention was simply impossible. That’s when they realized AI’s potential—not to replace them, but to amplify their impact. Their excitement was contagious, inspiring us to band together—technologists and educators working side by side—to turn this vision into reality.

TA39 was designed as a Teacher’s Assistant at D39: helping teachers give individualized feedback to every single student, even in large classes. What a teacher would love to offer one student, TA39 makes possible for every student in the room. It’s about scaling what great teachers already do best, without burning out.

And so, Project TA39 became simply TA39, and the name stuck. What began as a small experiment has grown into a promising tool aimed at delivering personalized, meaningful feedback that would otherwise take days to provide. Many educators continue to contribute their ideas, helping to shape TA39 into a tool that meets the real needs of teachers.
